flag to tell if current edit is in a package?

Consult the JDK documentation at java.sun.com for details about setting tool options.

The Options Menu has two more choices: Paths and packaged.

The Options Menu - Paths and packaged choices

Paths

Bring up a source path and class path selection dialog.

packaged

Is the current file in the Edit Window packaged? If selected (true) then run (java), rmic and AppletViewer commmands will try to access the class file in the package. The package is determined by using the source path.
The package name = the file path - the source path.
For example:
Editing: c:/java/source/aslider/Aslider.html
source path is: c:/java/source
package name is: aslider
Thus AppletViewer will try to view 'aslider.Aslider.html'
The source path may be changed using the Paths Window.

Note:

  • The -cp option is checked
  • The other checkbox is checked
